Ben and Linda, Support received the following note from Brendon Hoch of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University. This is very timely given your upcoming trip to LDEO. Please note the offer of LDEO acting as an IDD top level tier after they have purchased and installed a NOAAPORT reception system. Also, since not just any NOAAPORT reception system can "plug-n-play" with the IDD (the MD5 checksum issue; the repackaging of data into feeds that look like the old FOS, etc.), it would be a very good idea for us to get our input into their purchase decision before they cut any POs IF we want them to act as a new IDD injection site. Our mission is to continually assess and develop seasonal-to-interannual climate forecasts, and to foster the application of such climate forecasts to the explicit benefit of societies. To fulfill the needs of our mission, we are interested in receiving data products from the DDS, IDS, and HRS datastreams available from the National Weather Service. Since the beginning of 2000, IRI has attempted to contract with Alden Electronics to acquire and install a NOAAPORT satellite receive system configured to receive the NWSTG channel. To date, the order has only been partially filled by Alden. With recent events that have transpired, IRI has determined that it would be unwise to continue pursuing a NOAAPORT system from Alden. We are currently beginning the process of searching for an alternative vendor to supply a NOAAPORT system. Until a vendor can be identified and system purchased, we are looking for an alternative means of acquiring the datasets in question as quickly as possible. We would like to consider using Unidata (IDD) as the source for these datasets until we can assemble a NOAAPORT system for our use. Once our system is assembled and tested, IRI would be happy to share datasets to the IDD as a top tier site. Over the next few days, I will be working to configure a Linux workstation with LDM software. Once I have the workstation to ready state, I will email address@hidden with the necessary information. LDEO is currently listed as a licensed Unidata site, though I suspect there has been little (if any) utilization of the IDD in recent years by indivduals on this campus. I am registered to attend the upcoming LDM Training Workshop (November 5-7) and look forward to meeting some of you in person so that we may further discuss issues in configuring LDM with our anticipated NOAAPORT system. Please contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions on how to proceed. We look forward to building a quality, long lasting relationship and becoming an active part of the Unidata community. Sincerely, Brendon Hoch Systems Analyst, IRI _______________________________________________________ Brendon Hoch International Research Institute for climate prediction Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University 141/208 Monell, 61 Route 9W, Palisades, NY 10964 ------------------------------------------------------- Phone: (845)680-4444 Fax:(845)680-4488 Email: address@hidden WWW: http://iri.ldeo.columbia.edu/~bhoch ------------------------------------------------------- ------- End of Forwarded Message
