Gerry, No, nothing you've missed since there are infinitely many ways of creating a NetCDF file. I could dump the GEMPAK data to a GEMPAK like ordered NetCDF file, but that probably wouldn't be the exact file format that your NetCDF tool would be expecting. Its just not an unambiguous process. You can create a grib product from the GEMPAK grid with gdgrib, and then use whatever grib to NetCDF converter you are using.
