It's the same issue. If you resample every other pixel (using pixel sampling or -2 mag), you'll decrease the image size to 835x1500 which I'm guessing fit's into your video card's texture size. What kind of video card are you using? Which version of Java and Java3D are you using? What platform are you trying this on?
