I believe it is totally possible to publication quality text, but you will have to experiment it on your machine. My suggestion is to try different font in your isl script, the quality of the font can be different in each machine. This probably answers your first two questions. The font associates with the ISL is somehow different from the font bounded with the IDV package and we did see people generated very nice text output.
