Could this be a 32/64 bit issue? The problem that configure is having is that it can't correctly link a C and a Fortran program together. I've seen this occur on platforms that have a 32-bit Fortran compiler and a 64-bit C compiler. In those cases, you have to find the correct flags to make your C compiler output 32-bit object files instead of 64-bit. (For gcc you set CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS to "-m32"). Look in the config.log file for the message you are seeing. There you will see how it is trying to compiler C and Fortran together, and there may be a useful error message.
