All,Just to follow up, I stopped by Kevin's office. To make a long (long) story short, there was confusion with the Java version (1.6 vs 1.7) between the admin user and "regular" user. In the end, we simply edited the runIDV script to explicitly point to the correct version of Java. (The IDV cannot run with Java 1.7 on OS X, yet.)
For those interested in the gory details...Inexplicably, the admin Java version supersedes the regular user Java, even when installing the IDV in the regular user's home directory. This problem is manifested only when the IDV runs from the icon *not* in the terminal which made this problem difficult to track down. In short, you are not in the same environment when running from the icon versus the terminal. (Other oddities: /usr/bin/java -version returns a different version depending on which user you are.) This was a tough nut to crack.

Sounds good - thanks! -kevin. I'll let you and Sean figure it out over a beer. ;-)Don On 3/14/13 9:01 AM, Kevin Manross wrote:Hi Don,That's the odd thing - when I run the runIDV script by hand there are noerrors and everything comes up as it should. Yes, I installed the IDV as an admin (and clicked the box to install JOGL) to install for all users. -kevin. On 3/14/13 8:55 AM, Don Murray wrote:Kevin- It sounds like a Java 3D issue. Did you install the JOGL for all users or just for your user id? If the latter, are you running IDV from the same account? If you open a terminal window, cd into the installation directory and run the runIDV script by hand. That way you should see any error messages print to the screen. When launching from the icon, the splash screen comes up and then the Data Chooser window. But the splash screen never goes away and the Display Window never appears. When I run the script /Applications/IDV_4.0/runIDV from a terminal, itworks properly. I am running the following version of java: java version "1.6.0_41" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_41-b02-445-11M4107) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.14-b01-445, mixed mode)I could certainly use the IDV launching from a terminal, but the launchicon is more handy.
