My best suggestion is you read up on OPeNDAP, and how ti works as a service. OPeNDAP can have as the basis of its service any number file formats. What it does when it sends the request over the internet is transform each of these internal representations into a common external representation, which is an OpeNDAP binary. The latest versions of the netcdf library take it one step further, by making the remote files appear as netcdf files, and to be accessible by netcdf api commands. But even in this case, while the netcdf library hides the details, what gets transported is an OpeNDAP binary. I would repeat my suggestion that you more closely read posting guides, in particular what r-help sends you to, in particulat http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html and http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html. If you gave a small, complete program that can reproduce the problem that you are finding, than people have something specific that they can comment on. The error you are reporting could be from so many issues, because it is unclear what steps you have taken.
